Abstract

Communication research continues to be dominated by Western scientists and perspectives. The logical consequence of this domination is a dearth of scholarly engagement with communication phenomena from an explicitly Asian perspective. Using Gadamer’s hermeneutic method, this research tries to identify the values of Asian-based cultural communication as practiced by Raden Ngabei Ranggawarsita during Surakarta Hadiningrat Sunanate in 1800s. As a poet, Ranggawarsita portrayed the values of communication using profound metaphors. The use of metaphoric term to criticize current conditions was one of Ranggawarsita’s efforts to respect the interlocutor in order not to be offended. Furthermore, the use of Sanskrit showed that communication occurred in high context culture. It is because communication could not be separated from the local cultural context. Thus, this research makes a valuable contribution to the study of communication from an Asian perspective on a global academic level.
