Keywords:Chinese Claims, South China Sea, Bengkulu Naval Air Base, Main Duties of the Indonesian Navy.
The issue of South China Sea (SCS) claims, which until now has not been resolved between China and other ASEAN member countries has an impact on the Indonesian Exclusive Economic Zone (ZEEI). China as a claimant state is a great power that often takes aggressive actions in the South China Sea. Therefore the Indonesian government must strengthen its defense strategy in the waters adjacent to the South China Sea. This paper would elaborate more about what should Indonesia do in facing China which violates the Indonesian Exclusive Economic Zone and what is the most appropriate defense strategy of Indonesia to in protecting its jurisdiction? This research method uses a descriptive qualitative approach. Data collection was carried out by interview, observation and literature study. This paper recommends that the Indonesian government should be more assertive in its response to any aggressive Chinese claims and the patrols should be strengthened in the ZEEI area adjacent to the South China Sea. Maximum patrols can be carried out if the construction of Bengkulu Naval Air Base has been realized.
